Trash - Businesses

Apartment Buildings with four or more units, mixed-use residential/commercial buildings and commercial properties must contract for their own trash/recycling collections services. Click here for information about recycling requirements for businesses.

What Goes in the Trash? 

The following materials are listed as trash because they are not accepted by the majority of the recycling facilities. Read below to see which of these materials can be recycled or composted through other means of collection and recovery. 

  • Plastic bags, wrap, and film of any kind
    • Consider recycling plastic film at your business. Click here to learn more.

  • Chip bags
  • Candy wrappers
  • Condiment packets

  • Food waste
    • Food waste can be prevented and recovered. Click here for more information.

  • Items smaller than 2"x2"
    • Plastic utensils
    • Straw
    • Portion cups

  • Juice and flexible pouches

Foam Polystyrene blocks, peanuts, tray, to-go container, and cup 
  • Diapers and personal sanitary products
  • Wet wipes (do not flush) 
  • Tissues, napkins & paper towels

  • Clothing and textiles
    • Consider donating or selling these materials if they are in good condition (dry and odorless). As a last resort, place them in the trash.

Other Trash Requirements

Place all trash in an approved container.

Trash should not overflow the container or be stored in paper or plastic bags outside of an approved container.

Clock

Remove trash at least twice a week.

Your trash collector must have a current Solid Waste Collector’s license issued by the District. Please visit the DCRA's Business License website and click the “Solid Waste Collection” under the license category.
